At least 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national projects. They were built at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
