In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
