Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
